Long popular with artists, the town attracted the international “jet set” in the 1960s, and remains known for its beaches and nightlife. St Tropez began life as a military stronghold and humble fishing village but it was inevitable that with such natural beauty and a location between Marseille, Provence and the Cote d’Azur, it would become a seaside resort. Finally the rest of us arrived to see both the beauty of nature and the beautiful people. The Plage de Pampelonne is a dream stretch of golden sands and clear, blue waters and is lined with glamorous bars and restaurants. For shopping, check out the exclusive boutiques and knick-knack shops, then find some more affordable offerings at the Place des Lices market. At night everyone heads to the famous Les Caves du Roy nightclub – paparazzi included – in the desirable Hotel Byblos, one of the ritziest hotels in the world.
The atmospheric Vieux Port is the heart of Saint-Tropez, where the old fishing village first sprung to life. The Old Town of Saint-Tropez, known as “La Ponche” borders the Vieux Port harbor basin and is below the citadel. La Ponche is the historic center of the fishing village and is the most picturesque area of Saint Tropez. Even though Saint-Tropez is most famous as a jet-setting beach resort, the village also has important cultural sites. One of the top tourist attractions in Saint-Tropez is its art museum, which occupies the former Chapelle Notre-Dame de l’Annonciade (Chapel of the Annunciation). Although famous for its private beach clubs along the Pampelonne, several public beaches are free (except for fees to rent lounge chairs and beach umbrellas).
